Rebetiko, plural rebetika, (Greek: ρεμπέτικο, pronounced [reˈbetiko] and ρεμπέτικα respectively), occasionally transliterated as Rembetiko, is a term used today to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek folk music which have come to be grouped together since the so-called rebetika revival, which started in the 1960s and developed further from the early 1970s onwards.

Although nowadays treated as a single genre, rebetiko is, musically speaking, a synthesis of elements of European music, the music of the various areas of the Greek mainland and the Greek islands, Greek Orthodox ecclesiastical chant, often referred to as Byzantine music, and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music.

The word rebetiko or plural rebetika is an adjectival form derived from the Greek word rebetis (Greek: ρεμπέτης, pronounced [reˈbetis]). The word rebetis, is today construed to mean a person who embodies aspects of character, dress, behavior, morals and ethics associated with a particular subculture. The word is closely related, but not identical in meaning, to the word mangas (Greek: μάγκας, pronounced [ˈma(ŋ)ɡas]), which means strong guy.

So, what happens when you mix Greek Rebetiko music with comics is SupeRembets!
SupeRembets is a team consisted by the major figures of rebetiko, all four of them great bouzouki players and composers. From left to right Manolis Chiotis (Μανώλης Χιώτης), Vasilis Tsitsanis (Βασίλης Τσιτσάνης), Markos Vamvakaris (Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης) and Giannis Papaioannou (Γιάννης Παπαϊώαννου).

Being loyal to the philisophy of superheroes, everyone had to be given an identity and a range of superpowers!
The X (Manolis Chiotis)

El Tsitsano (Vasilis Tsitsanis)

Vasilis traveled from the small town of Trikala to the big city of Athens seeking to expand his audience and make his music known to every greek. The Bouzougun that he is holding is an invention given to him by the X.
Some claim to have seen El Tsitsano as a passing shadow on the rooftops patrolling the city.
Super Mark or the Patriarch (Markos Vamvakaris)

Markos Vamvakaris who came from Syros to Athens looking for work met an old man from Piraeus who claimed to have a strange type of tobacco planted secretly in his house. The old man persuaded Markos to smoke some of it. Since then, every time help is needed in the city Markos rolls a cigarette and he immediatelly becomes Super Mark!
PJ (Giannis Papaioannou)

When Giannis tasted a radioactive loukoumi (greek delight) offered to him by Markos on a night playing on stage suddenly his eyes turned yellow and a fiery aura covered his whole body. From that night forth, Giannis became PJ, master of the flame, such as his songs that sing the fire in the heart of the loved ones...
